This is not your typical library candle, because its inspiration is no ordinary place. For this candle, I drew upon enduring sense memories of afternoon tea and cookies served at 4 p.m. I spent many long, peaceful hours tucked away in a large leather armchair in an alcove upstairs, immersed in the beautiful lyricism of Toni Morrison, Ntozake Shange, Zora Neale Hurston, Maya Angelou and James Baldwin. I once trekked there through a blizzard, hoping for an autograph from author and guest lecturer David Bradley.
I left my well-read copy of his novel The Chaneysville Incident propped against Professor Cook's office door, along with a note, and hurried off to my next class. When I returned, my book was resting in the exact same position. Assuming I had missed him and that he was already on his way to Boston, I opened the book and was happily surprised to find he had, in fact, autographed the dedication page. In a neat, sloping hand he wrote:
