I am a South Carolina born, Brooklyn raised, unapologetically Black woman. I am a soccer mom of 3 busy teenagers (my youngest are fraternal twins). I am a highly regarded, inspirational public speaker and a widely-respected, proven leader in promoting equity and inclusion and creating opportunities for Black people, people of color and women in the workplace and access to counsel. As an outspoken antiracist educator, I believe in Black women demanding our full human rights, claiming our rightful spaces and setting firm boundaries around our time, talent and the value we bring. We did not invent race and racism; it is therefore not our job to solve and we have no obligation to nurse and heal others from its poison.
My ethos includes a strong component of “Self” — self-confidence, self-care and self-affirmation for Black people. I also expect white allies and accomplices to educate yourselves, using the resources and immense intellectual and emotional labor Black women and femmes have already put out into the world. That is your inner work to do and also your personal obligation as human beings.
The world needs constant reminders that we Black people are allowed to be fully human, with the full range of human emotions. We are entitled to fun, joy, laughter, travel, family and friends. We deserve to live full lives and pursue multiple outside interests. We get to have and enjoy nice things, too. Unapologetically.
